<image:title>Home - Welcome to the Center for Emerging Adulthood</image:title>
<image:caption>I started the Center for Emerging Adulthood because in my broad experience working with young adults in transition, I became aware of many unmet needs. Times change quickly — the needs of young adults today are frequently minimized and marginalized. In my work with young adults and other people in transition, I began to see the need for a Center that would focus seriously on this life stage and its unique developmental challenges. Like the hinge of a door, so much later development pivots on the way this early adult transition is navigated. I am a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of adolescents, young adults, and their families. Having worked with all ages, from children to seniors, in a variety of settings (inpatient and outpatient hospital units, a personality disorders program, a juvenile detention center), it wasn’t until my work at college counseling centers that led me to realize helping those in young adulthood is crucial to later development and life satisfaction. – Jillian M. <image:title>Emerging Adulthood - What is “emerging adulthood?”</image:title>
<image:caption>In recent years, young adults have faced an unstable, rapidly shifting, vocational and residential landscape. Confronted with a bewildering range of choices and dilemmas, many in this age group have been marking time, confused, sometimes to the point of paralysis while they seek to find themselves. The term emerging adulthood has been current since Jeffrey Arnett used it in his 2006 article in The American Psychologist, titled Emerging Adulthood: A Theory of Development from the Late Teens to the Early Twenties. He describes the increasing instability young people have with respect to vocation and residence. Faced with a clientele of young adults as they face these conditions, we launched the Center for Emerging Adulthood, to help people find their way through this unstable landscape, while at the same time touching base from where they came. We strive to help young people construct a sense of self as they cope with these unprecedented challenges.</image:caption>

<image:title>Emerging Adulthood - Why we created the center</image:title>
<image:caption>The psychological needs of people ranging from late adolescence through the 30s and beyond, derive from the increasing prevalence and complexity of familial difficulties, including marriage and divorce, social and vocational and instability, and the increasing awareness of trauma related to sex, race, immigration, and other factors. Young adults are thrown into this demanding and disorienting world; clinical work with them equips us with the tools and experience needed to help people to cope with the challenges of life at any age. Noticing the acute need felt by many people for help orienting themselves to a quickly changing and disorienting world, we decided to mobilize the skills gathered through years of intensive and wide-ranging training for the benefit of a new generation. At the Center for Emerging Adulthood we are well positioned to bring innovative approaches to bear on this fast-evolving stage of life with its unprecedented challenges for young people and the therapists to whom they turn for guidance and help.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Consultation</image:title>
<image:caption>Consultation is about exploring one’s options for psychotherapeutic treatment. During a consultation, in which one describes one’s difficulties, impasses, aspirations and goals with the therapist. The therapist offers recommendations and guidance through the often confusing maze of therapeutic options, from individual or group psychotherapy, to diagnostic assessments, to referral for psychopharmacological and other medical interventions. The goal is to create a partnership with a mental health professional in making choices among the treatment options available.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Individual Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Individual Psychotherapy provides an opportunity for you to share your thoughts and feelings in a private setting with an involved, objective, professional. Exploring confusing and perhaps painful interpersonal and emotional experiences in this setting can provide new perspectives that lead to productive change. Many of us have unexamined assumptions about ourselves and other people that lock us in to counterproductive and unhappy cycles of interaction. A process of psychotherapeutic exploration can highlight the potentials for positive change in how we think, feel, and interact, breaking into vicious circles, releasing our potential to take control of our lives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Group Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to the therapeutic processes described above in relation to individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy provides an opportunity for in vivo feedback about one’s patterns of relating with other people. With the guidance of the group therapist, one has the opportunity to help and be helped, to learn and benefit from the experiences of others in the group.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When more than one generation is added to the picture, (e.g., children and/or grandparents) to form a family therapy, the systemic dynamics become potentially overwhelmingly complex. Family therapists are trained to recognize and re-form destructive family dynamics in ways that can free all family members from repeating them inside and outside the family.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Services - Couple Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Relationships can reach an impasse when each partner, unknowingly, sets off counterproductive patterns in the other, creating self-reinforcing vicious circles. The addition of an objective third party, a couples therapist, can illuminate these self-defeating dynamics. <image:caption>Many of us find ourselves, despite our best intentions, repeating counterproductive, even self-destructive, patterns in our lives. These patterns are enabled by “blind spots” in our self-awareness that can be detected and corrected when subject to a psychoanalytic perspective. Contemporary psychoanalysis has evolved to a great extent since Freud’s day. It is now much more collaborative and user friendly than the analysis of old, while retaining the excitement of the original insight into the unconscious. <image:caption>The rapid growth of technology, and ever changing social and economic conditions, means that in many spheres of life, you face challenges that would have been unknown even five or ten years ago. In many ways, you may feel that you have to blaze your own trail through this shifting and uncertain landscape. You must keep pace with equally rapid shifts in gender and sexual categories, the nature of relationships and the ways people enter into and sustain them. This period of transition has lifelong significance as a critical phase of preparation for adulthood At the Center for Emerging Adulthood we devote ourselves to keeping track of the conditions facing you in your life. We have in-depth understanding of the bewildering conditions that you face and what it takes to survive and to thrive in the contemporary world. <image:title>Our Clientele - Parents and Families</image:title>
<image:caption>When a child struggles, the entire family struggles. Parents must sometimes walk a fine line when they think professional mental health services may be helpful to their adolescent or young adult children. The autonomy of this age group must be respected; in any case, mental health services will be optimally helpful when the recipient is fully on board, notwithstanding questions they may have about their treatment questions which they will be encouraged to discuss with their therapist. On the other hand, parents may notice indications, not fully recognized by their late adolescent/young adult child that he or she might benefit from professional services. In such cases, we are prepared to offer suggestions to parents as to how they might tactfully handle the situation. We partner with families and any other professionals in your child’s life to make sure they get the support they deserve.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Approach - How we work with you</image:title>
<image:caption>Beginning therapy is never easy. No matter how much you may know that therapy may be important for advancing you toward your life goals, or for resolving an impasse, there is always anxiety as the time approaches, and necessarily so. We appreciative of the courage it takes to explore oneself in therapy; we strive to create a welcoming atmosphere that facilitates this difficult but crucial work. We will start by listening to you carefully to understand what you need to move forward with your life and where you feel stuck. We will then develop a plan with you to respond to the need of the moment in the light of your long-term goals for yourself.</image:caption>
